Is fat free really healthy?

We have been made to believe that FAT is bad for us ...especially those of us who are struggling to maintain a healthy weight. So there are myriads of 'fat free' foods available for our consumption; when foods are completely fat free it is usually loaded with sugar ( to improve the taste) and other additives ( to boost the texture) so it can still be as tasty as the full fat version.

In light of this we really need to realise that excess sugar (including carbohydrates which ends up as sugar in our system) is the major culprit in weight gain and NOT FATS. So to avoid this pitfall we need to constantly read food labels to check out ingredients in what we are buying and also calorie content....you might find out you are better off with the full fat version in small quantity than the sugar laced fat free version.

What we need to avoid like poison is saturated fat and Hydrogenated fat (aka margerine)

STAY AWAY FROM THE BAD FATS
  • Eat lean cuts of meat.....remove the skin from chicken and Turkey before you eat them
  •   Avoid margerine like poison it's a chemical concoction your body does not need; eat real butter or better still nut butters ( like peanut butter) in moderation.
  •   Eliminate or reduce your intake of Palm oil...it is HIGH in saturated fat.
  • Prepare food the healthier way by steaming, grilling, poaching , baking etc.

Researchers and nutritionists have made available to us evidence that the GOOD FATS are highly beneficial to us. Our bodies need them to function optimally. Fats help us to absorb vitamins A,D and E. It is recommended that about 25% of our daily caloric intake should be from the good fats.

MAKE A CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO INCREASE YOUR INTAKE OF GOOD FAT BY:

  • Increasing your intake of oily fish like Salmon, Mackerel (aka Titus), Sardines (aka Sawa)
  • Making nuts and seeds a part of your daily diet (just make sure you watch your portions as they are high in calories.
  • Use good quality unsaturated oil....preferably cold pressed
  • Replace Mayonnaise with plain yoghurt in recipes....just add a squeeze of lemon juice.
The quest for a healthy BMI is a worthy health investment; pursue it.
